Many contractors are enhancing their knowledge of lead abatement to obtain licensure from the Ohio Department of Health. Recently, nearly two dozen individuals completed a rigorous 40-hour course in preparation for the state licensing exam. This course, facilitated by the Ohio Department of Health, provided participants with theoretical knowledge through book work and practical skills with hands-on training. Thanks to federal funding secured by the West Ohio Community Action Partnership, these classes were made accessible, and Daddys at Work generously offered classroom space, facilitating the learning process for numerous students.

Reflecting on the importance of addressing lead issues in the Allen County community, independent contractor Bill Mears expressed his enthusiasm. "I was excited to hear that we are taking proactive steps to address lead issues and safeguard the health of children in our community," he stated.

Similarly, Matt Peters, a contractor from Daddys at Work, emphasized the significance of community involvement. "Daddys at Work is committed to making a positive impact in the Lima community. Undertaking projects like this will not only help us in our house remodeling endeavors but also contribute to improving overall housing conditions," he remarked.

Pete Dell, president and founder of Lead Experts, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the training program. "Throughout the course, participants gained insights into OHSA regulations for worker safety, EPA and HUD regulations for housing protection, and Ohio Department of Health regulations for licensure maintenance. By adhering to these standards, we aim to create lead-safe housing environments and prevent childhood lead poisoning," Dell explained.

This marks the second class taught by Dell in Lima, attracting students from as far as Toledo and Detroit. Looking ahead, Dell plans to conduct additional training sessions, including a lead-safe renovators class, with the hope of expanding access to vital knowledge and skills in lead abatement.
